A new interview with Miyazaki by 4gamer dropped today. Here is a brief summary translation
Summary of most of the newest interview with Miyazaki that dropped today from 4gamer. Link: https://www.4gamer.net/games/463/G046388/20220620079/
Miyazaki is not exactly sure why Elden Ring sold as well as it did and reached a new audience. Maybe because of working with GRRM, maybe the large scope of the game and its open world. Still awaiting analysis.
When Miyazaki starts planning a new game, he thinks about what unique experiences that game could offer. As an example, the parry system in Sekiro brought a new kind of swordfighting experience.
Elden Ring builds off the technical skills and know-how of FROMSOFT from its past titles.
Miyazaki said that making a game the scale of Elden Ring would've been impossible without the experience they gained from Dark Souls; a game the scale of Elden Ring is not something that can be achieved out of nowhere from zero.
Miyazaki is not concerned that they've set a high standard for themselves when it comes to their next title. There is no set review score or sales number they feel they need to match (though in saying that, I recall Bandai Namco set a sales prediction of 4 million for Elden Ring, so maybe he means no expectations or hurdles they feel the need to match or will be hindered by).
The interviewer recalls when they spoke in 2018 after Sekiro was announced. Miyazaki said at the time that there were 2 unannounced titles in development. 1 was Elden Ring. The other still has not been announced but is in the final stages of development.
Miyazaki spoke of the development system in place at FROMSOFT, how they delineate teams, etc, and that there are other projects headed by other directors. He said he hopes to show a different side or flavour of FROMSOFT.
Miyazaki stated his intention to continue in his role as director.
The interviewer noted that Miyazaki entered the games industry with no experience, and recognises that FROMSOFT is a workplace for such opportunities. However he noted the image of the company as having a harsh work environment.
Miyazaki rejected this notion, and said that there have been improvements in recent years. Said that they want to avoid unreasonable physical and time expectations in their work ethic. Also noted improved pay conditions, particularly for younger and mid-career employees.
Miyazaki spoke of the group oriented development environment in FROMSOFT, "encouragement/stimulus through cooperation" as he refers to it. He says he doesn't think very highly of his own creative abilities, and it is instead the work of the whole team that mutually inspires and encourages each other to making the best work they can.
The interviewer asks if this is why it's rare to see specific callouts by individuals saying "I designed xyz character" because of the emphasis on cooperation in development.
Miyazaki says not really, and that individuals do feel pride in their work as a driving force, but that it is prioritising the development of the whole game that is important, rather than fixation over specific points.
Miyazaki said they are already working on their next title. To avoid spoilers, he said that, more than their past titles, he wants to focus on more "abstract" fantasy. He says that the action RPG genre has been limiting in terms of what ideas can be implemented, and that he's been looking for a place to collect all those ideas unsuitable for ARPGs and release them together (e.g a non ARPG game in a different style of fantasy it sounds like).
He commented on Deracine. Miyazaki says it was a project he put a lot of care into and is quite attached to, and even though its sales weren't great, he really likes it (sounds like a labor of love project more than one that would get high sales).
Finally, Miyazaki said that updates for Elden Ring will continue. He also says that, in addition to titles he is directing, there are other projects within FROMSOFT that are being directed by other people, but he can't speak about them.
Let me know if there are any errors or mistranslations.
